Rafael Sánchez is a native of Mexico City. He started playing the cello at an early age and continued his formal training at the National School of Music of the National University of Mexico under Ignacio Mariscal.. His interest in early music drove him to study viola da gamba with Gabriela Villa-Walls and to take master classes with Wieland Kuijken, Philip Pickett and Christine Plubeau. He was recipient last year of a special scholarship given by Fundaciòn Turquois to study cello in Monaco with the great master Frédéric Audibert. He is also recipient since 1998 of a scholarship given by Fundación Alberto y Dolores Andrade, A.C. to students who show special talent. He has performed as soloist and with several orchestras in México, France and Monaco.
